Bridget here from your online group…we love our Forrester! It is less expensive than the Outback, great head room, and bigger windows. It has been fuel-efficient, and great on snow/ice. We talked my sister into one too. It has plenty of room to haul things home as well (or for Gus to ride along).
We had a 2 door impreza while we lived in Alaska. When we were leaving to travel back to Fairbanks from Anchorage we woke up to about 3 feet of fresh snow (I seem to remember 43 inches being the tally but it might be like the fishing tale that just grows bigger each season), the impreza was literally buried (oh I wish we had a picture). We shoveled it off, cleared some space around it, had my parents give it a push (luckily we were at the top of a hill, which hadn’t been plowed) and away we went. We passed maybe 15-20 Trucks/SUV’s in ditches in the next few miles and we were just cruising along!
As to which Subaru I think it’s a matter of style and how you would use it. We have an outback now, it’s a little longer than the Forester but the Forester does have more headroom. The Forester has also been growing bigger whenever they introduce a redesign of it.
I voted Outback, but it was really just a vote for Subaru in general. Like Tom said our little Impreza was a very good car. That morning (with the 40+ inches of snow) we were the only vehicle on the road that was not a truck or large SUV and half of them were in the ditch….you should have seen the looks on the faces of the poor people standing in the ditches next to their big trucks wondering how we even got out of our driveway and wishing they had a Subaru too.
I wrote in Other Hyundai Sante Fe. I have one and never thought I would buy anything other than American. However I love my Sante Fe! I don’t have the 3rd row seating that you can get. But in my “cargo” area my floor lifts up for extra storage. It rides so nice too. Plus you can’t beat the 100,000 mile warranty. As long as I keep up with the scheduled maintenance the 100,000 is good.

Good luck!

So that is my vote!
