Our love affair with Powells…
is ridiculous. We absolutely ADORE coming to Powells in Portland. I’m here waiting for Dave to finish up, and we’ve already been here for 3 hours. He went off to the gardening section, so I’m thinking I have at least another hour to just hang with my computer in the coffee shop. I found awesome adoption books today. They are all kids’ books, which is great, but I was hoping to find some other good adult books as well. See, the thing with Powells is that they sell new and used books in good condition. The used books are much cheaper than the new books, so I refuse to buy new books (I could do that at home). The adult adoption books were all new, so I’ll have to keep searching. I’ll post a list later of all of the kids’ books that we bought. Lots of goodies
We also found a Tagalog phrase book and CD. We have not learned ANY Tagalog yet, and we really need to get on that! We want to at least learn how to say, “Thank you for loving our son”, “We love you, Ezekiel”, “We are your mom and dad”, etc. I at least know that mom is nanay, and dad is tatay. Yay! I also know that thank you is salamat or salamat po for a more respectful thank you. I’m so excited about learning new phrases!!!
Watch for a future post recounting Adventures in Travel with the Ribars…
Rachel,
I have a book suggestion for you…Filipino Friends by Liana Romulo. It is a cute kid book that has translations of English workds in Tagalong throughout. Really cute kid friendly pictures. I think a kid-friendly book will make it easier for me to learn it. Ha!

Okay, I know you didn’t ask, but here’s how you could say those phrases:
-Maraming salamat po sa inyong pag-aalaga at pag-mamahal sa aming anak. (thank you very much for taking care of and loving our child)
-Mahal ka namin (WE love you); Mahal kita (I love you)
-Kami ang iyong nanay at tatay (WE are your mother and father); Kami ang iyong magulang (WE are your parents); Ako ang iyong nanay/tatay (I am your mother/father).
You guys will do great! and I’m sure hearing some familiar phrases will help put him at ease.

Jenny,
We bought that book, and I love it! It’s great
Emilie,
THANK YOU so much for writing out the phrases!!! We bought a Tagalog CD and book, so I’ll be able to hear the way things are pronounced. These are great
